Psychoanalytic Program

IPS prepares students to apply psychoanalytic knowledge in order to deepen their understanding of their patients and to feel more competent in their therapeutic work.  Our program includes academic coursework, supervised clinical practice, and personal analysis. The Institute is flexible with all aspects of the fees associated with training, including low-cost supervision and analysis fees adjusted to the needs of the candidates. Certification is granted upon successful completion of the program and formal participation in a tutorial review driven by the candidates’ special interests.

PsyA Certification is granted upon successful completion of the coursework and participation in the Tutorial Review, in which the candidate pursues independent study with a chosen faculty member.

Application Process

Applicants are required to fill out an application prior to the start of the fall semester and are called to interview with the Director of the Institute.  Upon acceptance in the program, they are required to pay tuition and processing fees prior to the start of the semester.

Coursework

Through a carefully designed series of courses, candidates explore the clinical and theoretical foundation of psychoanalysis, with an emphasis on character analysis. Classes are small, generally with six or fewer candidates.  By keeping our classes small, our institute fosters a supportive, intimate environment for discussion and study.

Clinical Experience

In addition to coursework, each candidate gains clinical experience both by working with patients in psychoanalysis and by participating in analysis with an IPS faculty member. These experiences help the candidate to become a more competent clinician.

At the start of the program, each candidate is assigned a supervisor who meets regularly with him or her to discuss everything from managing cases to building and running a psychoanalytic practice.

Candidates also participate in two control analyses – one-on-one meetings with an analyst to follow one psychoanalytic case in depth. The experience helps the candidate to appreciate and make use of the vicissitudes of treatment: both the progress and the regress.

Professional Development and Networking

IPS maintains a Psychotherapy Referral Service, which provides referrals at affordable rates to therapists in private practice who are affiliates and candidates of the Institute. We carefully match patients with appropriate therapists to create optimal conditions for successful therapy. The referral service both enhances candidates’ practices and offers professional experience.

IPS also offers excellent networking opportunities. Our small classes, collegial environment, and collaborative approach make networking easy. Our Conversations, which are open discussions, give our candidates and faculty additional opportunity to get to know each other.

Eligibility

Study at the Institute requires a minimum of a Master’s degree and License (when required) in a mental health or related field.

Course Schedule

Each semester comprises 16 weeks. During each semester two courses will be held on alternate Tuesdays from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm.

All of our courses will be live interactive webinars held over Zoom.   A link for each course will be sent to the candidates by each instructor prior to the beginning of the semester.

Tuition

Tuition is $315 per course with a $100.00 processing fee per semester. A 50% refund will be made upon request through the first week of classes.

Course Completion Requirements:

Candidates are required to attend all classes offered, as evidenced by signing in and out, complete all assigned readings, participate in class discussions and complete a course evaluation

Certificates:

A candidate may request a certificate from the director of administration after the course is completed. The certificate will be mailed to them within two weeks of the course completion.

Grievances:

If a faculty member, administrator, or trainee wishes to complain about any of the Institute’s practices or programs or is in conflict with someone at the Institute, they may take the following steps to seek resolution:

1. Try to resolve the issue with the individual or individuals responsible or with whom they are in conflict.
2. If this fails, try to resolve the issue by seeking the help of their supervisor and the social work consultant, Nicole E. Grace.
3. If this fails, they may file a formal complaint in writing, including email, to the President, Dean, or the Director of Administration, any of whom should try to resolve the issue directly through consultation or mediation with the party or parties involved with the support of the social work consultant, or by calling a Training Committee meeting.
4. New Jersey social workers not pleased with a grievance resolution provided by the Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies, Inc. may appeal to the approving entity or their jurisdictional board.
